You probably already know that I l-o-v-e me some Love Notions Patterns. Tami is always so spot-on with her drafting, and her patterns are always on trend! When there was a call for the Hip Hop Tank Tour I was more than willing to try a new (to me) LN pattern.
The Hip Hop Tank, like all of Tami’s patterns, has SO. MANY. OPTIONS. It’s like getting six (or more, really) tops for the price of one pattern! Couple that with the fact that you’d be paying $10-$20 retail for each of the different options in a store…the ROI on making them yourself is well worth it. Plus, this pattern works great with knit AND woven fabrics, so it is a great staple for your stash!
I chose to the tulip back and hacked it so that it was completely open in the back similar to some tops I’ve recently pinned to my Sewing Style Pinterest board.
To achieve this look, I first sized up for an oversized fit (P.S. did you know Love Notions also boasts trimless pages AND choose your own size in their patterns? The best.). I took the back piece for view A and mashed it with the the back tulip skirt for view B so that it was one whole piece. When I cut it out on my fabric I did NOT cut it on the fold. I then laid the back pieces out on top of the front piece, and then made sure they overlapped each other so that the width was right. I basted the back pieces together about 1/4″ from the edge of the fabric and assembled per the instructions (except I did leave off the hems…quick knits are great for that!).
Another change I opted for this time around was keeping the wider tank look and adding bands instead of binding. Next time I’m definitely going to try the opposite route, but everything came together smoothly for my first time making this pattern.
